Read an excerpt From: Lawson, Heather Sent: 07 October 2034 Mum, The craziest thing happened today, all the power went out… everywhere. It’s been a few hours and it’s not looking like it’s coming back anytime soon. Work sent everyone home, as they weren’t sure what was going on. I was checking Facebook, and it seems like this has affected everywhere… is everything ok with you and Dad? I tried calling but lines were all busy so figured the best way was to email. Tells you something when all the power goes down and yet Facebook is still in full working order! Conspiracy theorists must be having a field day. Spoke to a couple on the bus home and they were telling me that the power goes down regularly in certain areas since the power company has been doing network improvement work. Looks like someone may have shorted out the grid! Let me know you’re OK and if you’ve heard anything? Lots of Love, Heather. From: Lawson, Anette Sent: 07 October 2034 Heather, So glad to hear from you. It's bedlam here. No one is telling us anything and yet the power has been off for hours, the same as you. I don’t know what’s happening. Your dad has been to see Trevor down at the police station to see if he knows anything, but apparently there’s no information about what’s happened anywhere. We have been to the local shops to stock up on food and batteries, as I don’t know how long this is going to last. David called earlier asking about you. He’s been dealing with parents all day as they had to close the school. You would think the electricity companies would be able to give some details about when they expect to regain power, but as it’s a global thing, I just don’t know what they can do? Get yourself out to the local store and stock up on essentials, you great-grandmother always said that being prepared for blackouts was the thing that kept them going through the war. You didn’t want to be left without lights or a cup of tea. I will call you in the next hour once your dad gets back from his messages. Speak soon. Hugs and kisses, Mum.
